MadChess Versus Computer Opponents

I prefer to run engine tournaments using a single time control that includes an increment. This is the modern practice. As opposed to a traditional time control that specifies x number of moves must be played in y minutes, with no increment, and potentially with multiple segments of different x and y values. Of course, the two practices may be combined (using an increment and multiple segments of x moves in y minutes), but that seems an unnecessary complication, in my opinion.

Using an increment prevents time scrambles that occur in games without an increment. Even in games with traditional repeating time controls (unlimited number of identical time control segments), a time scramble may occur in the final move before “the time control” (granting of more time for next segment).

  • Lightning = 30 sec / game +  0.3 sec / move
  • Bullet =     2 min / game +  1   sec / move
  • Blitz =      5 min / game +  3   sec / move
  • Rapid =     15 min / game + 10   sec / move
